Itinerary Day 1 - The Oregon Trail (Sunday, July 26) St. Elizabeth’s is heading west to follow the Oregon Trail. We pilgrims are ready for whatever adventure we may meet on the journey. We will begin our week by heading south to your home for the week, the Fr Bernard Youth Center. You’ll find the grounds a place of serenity during an enlightening week. On our way back to the retreat center we will allow three groups to shop for Stone Soup and our first group will give it a go that evening. We may even join the monastic community in evening Vespers. Tonight your leaders will set the vision for the week as you set your heart on pilgrimage. Welcome to Oregon!
Day 2 - A Spiritual Labyrinth (Monday, July 27) Oftentimes, our spiritual journey is like a labyrinth that we feel uncomfortable to enter. But a labyrinth is a pattern full of beauty, adventure and trust. This morning we’ll visit a local labyrinth and get a lesson from an expert about what it means to walk the labyrinth. In the afternoon, we will discover a different kind of trust as we take-on one of Oregon’s incredible high ropes courses. Get ready, group two is up for their version of Stone Soup.
Day 3 - Waterfall (Tuesday, July 28) We will visit St. Timothy’s this morning for a special Pilgrim’s Eucharist. Afterwards, we will head to Silver Falls State Park. This beauty of a location, nestled in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains, has ten waterfalls to explore, including the 177-foot South Falls that you will get a chance to walk behind. In the evening we have our last Stone Soup.
Day 4 - Ocean of God’s Love (Wednesday, July 29) We will spend the day on the Oregon Coast with a variety of activities. We will start at the Sea Lion Caves, America's largest sea cave and the year-round home of the Steller sea lion. Hopefully they’ll be in attendance when we arrive. After lunch at a coastal park we’ll do a beach clean up with SOLVE and learn about man’s impact on the fragile coastal ecosystem. At low tide we will explore the lively tidepools with a local guide. Dinner will come with an ocean view before our evening talk back at the monastery.
Day 5 - Whitewater (Thursday, July 30) On our third day of water adventures we head to Oregon backcountry to experience a half day of whitewater rafting. Stunning views, refreshingly cold water and adventure will keep us on our toes. Once again, you will see a totally different ecosystem and experience a different side of this amazing state.
Day 6 - Portlandia (Friday, July 31) Let’s head into Portland. In the morning, we’ll start at the Grotto, Portland’s genuine pilgrimage spot. We may even get a chance to walk their outdoor stations of the cross. In the afternoon, you’ll have a lot of exploration time in some of Portlandia’s fun neighborhoods. We’ll enjoy a special Celebration Dinner tonight before we come back and Pass the Candle.
Day 7 - Headin’ Back East (Saturday, August 1) You have traveled to the west coast and made a few new discoveries. By taking time out of your lives to explore your spiritual lives on pilgrimage, you’ve opened your heart to God’s Spirit. But you have also discovered a life quite different than your Massachusetts-existence. We hope Oregon lodges deep within your heart and that the heart you’ve shown in Oregon will continue back home.
